May 28, 2019

WASHINGTON – Acting Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security Kevin K. McAleenan is in Guatemala this week to participate in bilateral and multilateral meetings with government officials representing Northern Triangle countries, local civic and indigenous leaders, non-governmental organizations, and U.S. private sector and Guatemalan business leaders. The meetings will highlight the root causes driving the current high rate of irregular migration to the U.S., as well as viable options for enhancing protections of vulnerable populations.

During his four-day tour, McAleenan and Guatemalan President Jimmy Morales will meet to discuss enhancing bilateral cooperation in advance of the expected signing of a Memorandum of Cooperation between DHS and the Guatemalan Ministry of Government to support the Government of Guatemala’s efforts to stem the flow of irregular migration and dismantle transnational criminal and human smuggling organizations.
