As part of the commemoration of World AIDS Day, Ambassador Luis Arreaga visited the VICITS clinic of Colectivo Amigos contra el SIDA (Friends against AIDS Collective) where he learned about the work being done in coordination with the Ministry of Public Health, the support of CDC and its ICAP partner (International Center for AIDS Care and Treatment Programs) to implement the first pre-exposure prophylaxis project (PreP) to HIV in Central America.
PreP is a promising biomedical intervention, which helps prevent HIV in people prone to contract the virus by taking a medication every day. This strategy will help Guatemala reduce the number of people infected with HIV and reach the 90-90-90 goals of prevention, treatment and control of the epidemic.
With initiatives like PreP, the Government of the United States through PEPFAR and CDC reaffirms its solid commitment to work with the Government of Guatemala and civil society to advance in the fight against HIV. More information on PreP: http://ow.ly/oiFZ30gVi2C
