Ambassador William W. Popp Independence Day Message to U.S. Citizens in Guatemala, July 4, 2022

Dear fellow U.S. Citizens and Guatemalan friends:

Happy Independence Day! As U.S. Ambassador, it is my pleasure and honor to write to you in celebration of our nation’s 246th birthday. I wish you all a very joyous, fun, and safe “Cuatro de Julio” in Guatemala. I hope wherever you are – from the colonial streets of Antigua to the forested ruins of Petén – you will enjoy a wonderful Independence Day and share Fourth of July traditions with our Guatemalan hosts.

Independence Day is a time when we celebrate the liberty and the freedoms secured and defended by our forebearers. It reminds us of the power of shared vision, importance of coming together and being a community – the idea that from many are created one. In that spirit, we remember all who have made the ultimate sacrifice and all who continue to dedicate their lives in service to our nation. To our veterans, law enforcement professionals, emergency responders, teachers, nurses, diplomats, military personnel, and all others who serve our country and our communities, we sincerely thank you.

This Fourth of July is uniquely special for our diplomatic Mission in Guatemala because we will celebrate our official Independence Day reception in our new state-of-the-art Embassy in Cayalá. When the new Embassy officially opens in the coming months, it will be one of the most modern and advanced diplomatic platforms in the world. LEED certified and replete with new Consular facilities and more spacious indoor and outdoor waiting rooms for American Citizen Services and visa services alike. Built during the pandemic by a combined workforce of Guatemalans and Americans, our new Embassy is a fitting symbol of the resilience of our bilateral relationship and the enduring commitment to bring our nations closer together.

In closing, I hope you will enjoy this short video our Embassy team put together to commemorate what US-Guatemala cooperation has accomplished over the year. There is much to celebrate and more to come. Enjoy, and happy Fourth of July!

Sincerely,

William W. Popp

U.S. Ambassador
