Ambassador William Popp would like to share this message to all U.S. citizens in Guatemala in celebration of Memorial Day. A video of this message is available at this link.

Dear fellow American citizens,
Today, our nation celebrates Memorial Day.
Memorial Day is an opportunity for Americans each year to remember that freedom does not come without great sacrifice, hard work, and dedication of many people.
That is why we have set aside Memorial Day to recognize the contributions of those members of our military who sacrificed their lives in service to our country.
In U.S. Embassy Guatemala we have lost seven service members throughout our history. I am saddened to say this includes Sgt. Dylan Pena. His recent passing leaves a painful space in our Embassy community.
All of those that we have lost served in support of our national security, and to make our two countries safer.
Today I invite you to join me in honoring their memory, as well as of all the other Americans who have sacrificed for our country, as we also recognize the families and friends who have borne the burden of loss.
I also want to thank all the service members for your partnership with Guatemala over the last year, working as part of our embassy team to deliver medical equipment such as advanced vaccine freezers and mobile ventilators, setting up clinics across the country, providing humanitarian aid from natural disasters and even building a school in coordination with the regional medical exercise Resolute Sentinel.
Your contributions have been vital to continuing to build our partnership with Guatemala.
Today, I hope that all of you have the opportunity to spend time with your families and friends but also take time to reflect on those that defend and serve our nation every day.
To all our active military, veterans, and their families, thank you for your service!
