Event: The U.S. Embassy has received reports that 48 Cantones intends to conduct peaceful demonstrations throughout Guatemala on Monday, October 2, 2023.
Reports indicate that demonstrations and/or roadblocks may be encountered at the following locations on CA-1:
Km 117, Las Trampas, Sololá
Km 127, Los Encuentros, Sololá
Km 130, La Cuchilla, Sololá
Km 140, Chuiquel Village, Sololá
Km 144.5, El Novillero Village, Sololá
Km 148.5, Santa Lucía Utatlán, Sololá
Km 170, Alaska Summit, Totonicapán / Sololá
Km 174.5, entrance to Vásquez Village, Totonicapán
Km 188, Cuatro Caminos, Totonicapán
Km 190, Migrant Monument, Quetzaltenango
As always, the timing, size, and duration of planned demonstrations and roadblocks can change. Demonstrations can grow quickly in size and often move from one location to another, thus potentially disrupting movement. The Embassy recommends that U.S. citizens be aware and vigilant.
Actions to Take:
- Review your personal security plans and remain aware of your surroundings, including local events.
- Monitor local news for updates.
- Maintain a high level of vigilance, take appropriate steps to enhance your personal security, and follow instructions of local authorities.
- Avoid affected areas and exercise caution.
