Message for U.S. CitizensLocation: Guatemala

Event:  The Embassy has received information that several planned, peaceful demonstrations and roadblocks will take place across Guatemala between Monday, March 22 and Thursday, March 25.  At this time, the known participants are health care workers union and veterans of Guatemala’s armed forces.

The participants have announced their intention to protest and/or block roads at the following locations:

Monday, March 22

The National Union of Heathcare Workers (El Sindicato Nacional de Trabajadores de Salud de Guatemala – SNTG);

o   Government buildings across Guatemala.

Tuesday, March 23-Thursday, March 25

Veterans of Guatemala’s armed forces;

o   Guatemalan Congress, Zone 1, Guatemala City

o   Constitutional Court, Zone 1, Guatemala City

o   Human Rights building, Zone 1, Guatemala City

o   U.S. Embassy, Guatemala City

o   La Aurora International Airport

o   Three other unnamed airports in Guatemala

o   At every municipal building in Guatemala

o   At every customs building in Guatemala

o   At every Guatemalan Government building in Guatemala

o   At every Public Ministry building in Guatemala

o   At Puerto Quetzal, Escuintla

o   At Puerto Santo Tomas de Castilla, Izabal

o   Various hydroelectric plants around Guatemala

o   At the entrance to the oil company Perenco, in Peten

o   Autopista Puerto Quetzal, Escuintla

o   Carretera Transversal del Norte, Alta Verapaz

o   Carretera a las Trampas, Sololá

o   Carretera Las Vegas, La Mesilla, Huehuetenango

o   Cuatro Caminos, Occidente

o   Cruce del Zarco, Mazatenango

o   Cruce a Ipala, Santa Rosa

o   Cruce a Río Hondo, Zacapa

Actions to Take:

o   Avoid affected areas, and exercise caution if in the vicinity of any large gatherings, protests, or demonstrations.

o   Review your personal security plans and remain aware of your surroundings, including local events.

o   Monitor local news for updates.

o   Maintain a high-level of vigilance, take appropriate steps to enhance your personal security and follow instructions of local authorities.
