Location: Throughout Guatemala
Event: President Giammattei Inauguration
The Guatemalan Presidential Inauguration will occur on Tuesday, January 14, 2020, with formal events scheduled throughout the day. Due to the anticipated large crowds, traffic, and potential for protests, the Embassy has cautioned personnel and family members to avoid Zone 1. Areas scheduled as part of the inauguration program including the following locations:
Miguel Angel Asturias Cultural Center
Palacio Legislativo
Palacio Nacional de la Cultura
National Cathedral
Other areas that may be affected by inauguration events include local hotels in Zone 10 and La Aurora International Airport from January 13, 2020 through January 15, 2020.
The Embassy will continue to review the security situation and will provide additional information as needed. Embassy operations are normal.
Actions to Take:
- Review your personal security plans and remain aware of your surroundings, including local events.
- Monitor local news for updates.
- Maintain a high-level of vigilance, take appropriate steps to enhance your personal security and follow instructions of local authorities.
- Avoid affected areas, and exercise caution if in the vicinity of any large gatherings, protests, or demonstrations.
