Message for U.S. CitizensLocation: Guatemala

Event:  According to open source reporting, workers from the Ministry of Health have set up several roadblocks throughout the country which will impact traffic.  We do not have specific information relating to start or end times for these blockades.

Please take precaution surrounding the following locations:

CA-1 WEST

Km 49 San Miguel Morazán el Tejar

 CA-1 EAST

Km 121 San Antonio, Jutiapa

 CA-2 WEST

Km 163 Cruce de Mazatenango

Km 178 El Zarco

Km 212 Colomba Costa Cuca

Km 247 Cruce de la Virgen

 CA-9 NORTH  Ruta al Atlántico

Km 292 Puerto Barrios

CA-9 SOUTH

Km 56 Ruta Antigua entre Palín y Escuintla

CA-13  de Izabal hacia El Petén

Km 364 San Luis Petén

 While these demonstrations/roadblocks are planned to be peaceful, the Embassy reminds U.S. citizens that even peaceful protests have the potential to turn violent.  U.S citizens should also remain alert to the possibility of demonstrations occurring at unanticipated times and locations. Demonstrations can quickly grow in size and often move from one location to another, thus potentially disrupting movement.

The Embassy will continue to review the security situation and will provide additional information as needed.

 Actions to Take:

  • Review your personal security plans and remain aware of your surroundings, including local events.
  • Monitor local news for updates.
  • Maintain a high-level of vigilance, take appropriate steps to enhance your personal security and follow instructions of local authorities.
  • Avoid affected areas, and exercise caution if in the vicinity of any large gatherings, protests, or demonstrations.
