4 MINUTE READ
July 29, 2021

Message for U.S. CitizensLocation: Throughout Guatemala

Event: The Embassy has received information that several planned demonstrations, which include roadblocks, will take place across Guatemala starting Thursday July 29.  Several civil & student organizations seeking the resignation of the President and Attorney General of Guatemala have announced their intention to coordinate protests and road blocks throughout the many departments and localities of Guatemala.

U.S citizens should also remain alert to the possibility of demonstrations or road closures occurring at unanticipated times and locations. Demonstrations can quickly grow in size and often move from one location to another, thus potentially disrupting movement.

The Embassy will continue to review the security situation and will provide additional information as needed. The Embassy is informing employees they may need to re-arrange or postpone travel plans from Thursday, July 29 through Sunday, August 1.

Actions to Take:

  • Review your personal security plans and remain aware of your surroundings, including local events.
  • Monitor local news for updates.
  • Maintain a high-level of vigilance, take appropriate steps to enhance your personal security and follow instructions of local authorities.
  • Avoid affected areas, and exercise caution.
