To commemorate World AIDS Day, Deputy Chief of Mission David Hodge visited the clinic “Luis Ángel García” of Asociación Salud Integral (ASI), a non-profit organization with more than 28 years of experience in HIV and infectious diseases.
During his visit, Mr. Hodge learned about the advances in Guatemala of the Fast Start Antiretroviral Treatment (ARVT) strategy. This is an innovative initiative implemented by CDC through its partner, the University of the Valley of Guatemala, which aims to get people diagnosed with HIV to start their treatment immediately, a maximum of 7 days after knowing their medical condition.
Receiving early treatment improves the quality of life of people living with HIV and reduces the risk of transmitting the virus to others. This strategy will contribute to Guatemala reaching the 90-90-90 goals of prevention, treatment and control of the epidemic.
The United States continues to lead the way in research towards the global response to HIV / AIDS, in collaboration with different sectors. We work to support health in communities as an essential element for prosperity.
