Launch of the Antiretroviral Treatment Quick Start Strategy

Ambassador Luis Arreaga participated in the launch of the Antiretroviral Treatment Quick Start Strategy of the Comprehensive Care Unit for HIV and Chronic Infections Dr. Carlos Rodolfo Mejía Villatoro of Hospital Roosevelt.

This strategy, implemented by the Universidad del Valle de Guatemala, aims to get people with HIV to start treatment within a maximum of 7 days after diagnosis, to help improve their quality of life and reduce the risk of transmitting the virus. It is projected that 500 people will benefit from the Quick Start Strategy for Antiretroviral Treatment among the 1,200 patients who on average initiate treatment each year.

The U.S. is committed to continue working with the Ministry of Public Health and HIV patients with the support of the U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), CDC Central America, and its implementing partners, to help control the HIV/AIDS epidemic in the country.
