Message for U.S. Citizens: Sinkhole on CA-9 South Causing Traffic Delays (August 4, 2023)

Location: Guatemala City

The U.S. Embassy has received reports that there is a sinkhole on CA-9 South at km 17.5 in Villa Nueva that is affecting traffic into and out of Guatemala City.  Detours are directing traffic to CA-1 and other main routes.  Please avoid those routes, if possible, or expect traffic delays.

Please monitor local media as well as the website of PROVIAL (La Dirección General de Protección y Seguridad Vial) for updated road and hazard information.
