Message to U.S. Citizens: Upcoming National Elections in Guatemala (Message #3) (May 25, 2023)
Location: Throughout Guatemala
Event: National Elections in Guatemala
Guatemala will soon hold elections for its president, vice president, congressional seats, and other governmental positions, including all 340 mayors. The campaign season began on March 27, and will continue through the elections. The first round of voting is scheduled for June 25, 2023, and, if necessary, the second round of voting for the presidential and vice-presidential races is scheduled for August 20, 2023.
During election season, there are frequent large rallies, demonstrations, and other events associated with political campaigning. These events could cause increased traffic and otherwise disrupt movement, complicating travel. Local governmental services might also be limited, delayed, or unavailable at times during the election season. The U.S. Embassy has requested that all non-essential official travel to Guatemala be deferred between June 19-28, 2023, and August 14-23, 2023. The Embassy recommends that U.S. citizens be aware and vigilant, monitor local news, avoid affected areas, and exercise caution.
