Important Passport Information

Payment Methods & Details

We accept cash (USD or GTQ), debit cards, or credit cards.

For DS-82 (adult passport renewal) applications only, you may also pay online through pay.gov.  If you pay through pay.gov, please provide a copy of the online payment confirmation.

Security Information

For security purposes and due to capacity limitations, the Consular Section does not allow third-parties (such as friends, family or business contacts) to attend the ACS interview, with the exception of parents or legal guardians accompanying minors, elderly applicants, or applicants with special needs or disabilities. Escort animals trained to assist applicants with disabilities will be admitted.

All visitors and their belongings must pass through security screening before entering the Embassy.

Prior to entering security, please remove any belts, coats, sweaters, and any objects inside your pockets.  Please place these items in the tray provided by security on the conveyor belt for x-ray screening. 

The following items are prohibited inside the building:

  • Electrical devices such as cell phones, tablets, smartwatches, cameras, or any recording devices
  • Headphones
  • Any device that requires batteries with the exception of hearing aids
  • Cell phone chargers
  • Large purses, handbags, or backpacks
  • Electronic car keys
  • Food, excluding breast milk and prepared baby formula. Powdered formula will not be allowed in.
  • Any type of liquids such as lotion, hand sanitizer (antibacterial gel),  lipstick, water, etc. (Note:There are several hand sanitizer dispensers available throughout our waiting rooms)
  • Cigarettes, cigars, matches, or lighters
  • Sharp objects such as scissors, pens, nail files, or razor blades
  • Weapons or explosive materials of any kinds

There is no facility at the Embassy to store prohibited items. You must make arrangements to store these items before entering. Due to security considerations, there is no information window for walk-in visitors at the Embassy.

Other Information


Courier Companies: Cargo Expreso/Guatex

You may qualify to renew your passport by courier if you meet ALL of the following criteria:

  • Your previous U.S. passport book/card is in your possession;
  • You were at least 16 years old when your most recent U.S. passport book/card was issued;
  • Your most recent U.S. passport book/card was issued less than 15 years ago; AND
  • Your previous U.S. passport was issued under your current legal name.

NOTE:  Previous lost/stolen/mutilated passports DO NOT meet criteria for the service.

If you do not meet the above criteria, you should follow the regular passport application process and schedule an appointment at the U.S. Embassy in Guatemala.

The courier renewal process steps are as follows:

Please submit the following documents:

  1. Fill out the online Form DS-82 and print the typed form.  We do not accept applications filled out by hand.  Please make sure to sign and date the application.  Your signature should match the one in your previous passport.  Your SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER IS REQUIRED to adjudicate the passport application.  If have never been issued a Social Security number, you must submit a declaration signed under penalty of perjury (click here for the No Social Security Number statement).  This declaration does not need to be notarized.
  2. Provide one 2” x 2” photo  taken within the last 6 months.  Please remove your eyeglasses.
  3. Pay the $130 fee.  You may pay online or with a cashier’s check issued by a Guatemala bank.
    • To pay online, please go to pay.gov and then provide a copy of the online payment confirmation.
    • To pay by bank cashier’s check, the check must be the exact amount of $130 (U.S. dollars) or Q1027 (Guatemalan quetzals) and made out to “U.S. Disbursing Officer.”  The check cannot be more than six months old from the date issued.  Do not send cash, and do not write anything on the check.
    • If you are also applying for a U.S. passport card, please add $30 (U.S. dollars) or Q237 (Guatemalan quetzals).  At this time, it is not possible to pay the passport card fee through pay.gov.
    • IMPORTANT NOTE: Checks submitted with the incorrect amount or addressee will be rejected, and your application will be sent back to you using the return shipping label provided.
  4. Include your most recent U.S. passport.
  5. Bring all documents (form, photo, payment, passport) to any Cargo Expreso or Guatex agency – list of agencies is below.  You must include a prepaid return shipping label from the same courier agency so that we may return your new and previous passports.

Please take note of the following:

  • The entire process takes 4 weeks or more from the time your application leaves your hands until you receive your new passport.
  • Neither the Embassy nor the courier company will communicate with you regarding the status of your application, but you may use the tracking number from your return label to determine when the package is ready for pick-up.
  • Incomplete or incorrect applications will be returned to you using the return shipping label submitted with the application.
  • Courier agency personnel will not review your documents or application to verify whether they are correct or complete. They will ONLY make sure that you do not include cash in the envelope.
  • The courier agency will accept ONLY one application and one payment per envelope.
  • Do not forget to sign and date your application.
  • To obtain a bank cashier´s check, an active local Guatemalan bank account is required.

Reasonable Accommodation

If you need reasonable accommodation for your appointment, we encourage you to request your accommodation immediately once you schedule your appointment. We make every effort to provide accommodations to persons with disabilities and medical conditions. Reasonable accommodations vary, depending on the situation and the person’s needs.
Examples of accommodations include, but are not limited to:

    • If you require a private appointment due to a medical condition or disability, we may schedule an alternative time for you to come in for your interview.
    • If you or your child has special needs that requires a private appointment in a quiet space without distractions, we may schedule an alternative time for you or your family to come in for your interview.
    • If you are unable to speak, you may be allowed to respond to questions in an agreed-upon nonverbal manner such as using pen and paper.
    • If you are deaf or hard of hearing, you may bring a sign language interpreter to translate during the interview if needed.
    • If you have low vision, we may provide you with communications in large print.

If you are unable to provide fingerprints because of a medical condition, including birth defects, physical deformities, skin conditions, you may qualify for a fingerprint waiver for certain fingers.

  • Interview waivers are only granted in extreme situations, such as having a medical condition that requires flying in an air ambulance.
