Location:  Municipalities of San Juan Sacatepéquez and Mixco, Department of Guatemala

Event: State of Prevention, Increased Military and Police Presence

The Government of Guatemala has announced a State of Prevention for the Municipalities of San Juan Sacatepéquez and Mixco.  The State of Prevention is due to a serious security situation in these municipalities.  There will be increased military and police presence in these areas.

Effective immediately, U.S. Embassy official and personal travel to the above municipalities will only be authorized on a case-by-case basis.  Both municipalities are located along major routes to non-restricted destinations.  Therefore, travel along these routes is allowed; however, U.S. Mission personnel are encouraged not to stop in these locations along the routes.

Please be aware that there will be official police checkpoints along this route.  If you are stopped at an official checkpoint, please comply with all police commands and requests.  Embassy operations are normal.

 Actions to Take:

  • Review your personal security plans and remain aware of your surroundings, including local events.
  • Monitor local news for updates.
  • Maintain a high-level of vigilance, take appropriate steps to enhance your personal security and follow instructions of local authorities.
  • Avoid areas of demonstrations, and exercise caution if in the vicinity of any large gatherings, protests, or demonstrations.
