Security Alert – U.S. Embassy Guatemala City, Guatemala – (November 15, 2019)

Location: Guatemala City

Event:  On Saturday, November 16, 2019, at 4:00 pm, festivities will begin for the annual Christmas tree lighting ceremony, held in the center of the Obelisco.  This event will affect traffic on roads leading to and from the Obelisco throughout the afternoon and into the evening.  The actual tree lighting will occur at 7:00 pm.

Pedestrian traffic only will begin at 5:00 pm on Ave. Reforma leading to the Obelisco from various directions.  Accordingly, there will be disruptions and delays throughout the area.  We expect lane closures to remain in effect until the conclusion of the event at approximately 11:00 pm.  However, pedestrian traffic in the area of the tree lighting will remain heavy and complicate vehicular traffic for a few more hours.  Expect heavy traffic delays.  Embassy operations will be normal.
