Press ReleaseREF# 2021 – 27

On October 21-22, Ambassador William W. Popp will travel to Petén to review U.S. investments in economic growth, health, commerce, climate change and education to support the people of Guatemala. While in Petén, Ambassador Popp will join President Giammattei and Guatemalan Government representatives along with representatives from the diplomatic and NGO communities to celebrate the renewal of three existing community forestry concessions and the creation of two new concessions. The United States, with ongoing assistance from USAID, is an active member and contributor to the international coalition working to support sustainable forest management in Petén. This support from the United States Government to the concessions has reduced Guatemala’s greenhouse gas emission, generated more than 23,000 permanent and seasonal jobs and over $52 million in sales of products and services between 2013-2020.

Ambassador Popp will also visit front line medical workers administering U.S.-donated Moderna COVID-19 vaccines, and will meet with U.S. exchange program alumni, legislators working to support youth issues, members of the private sector and civil society, and local leaders.
