U.S. Marines in Guatemala City distribute toys to local children’s homes

On December 20, 2019, U.S. Marines delivered over 200 toys to local children’s homes in Guatemala City, bringing holiday cheer to children in need.

This is the fifth consecutive year that U.S. Marines, in collaboration with the United States Foreign Commercial Service, have collected toys through the Toys for Tots program.  Staff at the U.S. Embassy and several Guatemalan businesses donated the toys. The toys were distributed to various children’s homes in Guatemala City by U.S. Marines, U.S. Embassy staff, their families, and members from the American Chamber of Commerce (AMCHAM) chapter in Guatemala City.  Sgt. William Chavez, Assistant Detachment Commander for the U.S. Embassy’s Marine Security Guards, said “Toys for Tots is a way for the Marines, and all the other members of the U.S. Embassy, to give back to the community.  We’re grateful for the hospitality that Guatemalans have shown us, and we’re proud that we can do something to help our neighbors at Christmas time.”

The Toys for Tots program was created in 1947 by Major Bill Hendricks from the Marine Corps, and has since become an annual tradition at U.S. Embassies worldwide.  The purpose of the program is to collect toys for needy children during the holiday season.  Since its inception Toys for Tots has donated over 18 Million toys to children in need around the world.
