Update for U.S. Citizens – Possible Demonstrations in Guatemala City on June 18

Message for U.S. CitizensLocation: Guatemala 

Event:  The Embassy has received unconfirmed reports that a demonstration will take place in Guatemala City on June 18, beginning at El Obelisco at 10:00 a.m., then progressing to the National Palace.  According to the information received, the demonstration is being organized against certain COVID-related policies put in place by the Guatemalan government.

The Embassy recommends that American Citizens avoid traveling in the vicinity of Avenida Reforma in Guatemala City from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

The Embassy will continue to review the security situation and will provide additional information as needed.  Embassy operations are normal.

Actions to Take:

  • Review your personal security plans and remain aware of your surroundings, including local events.
  • Monitor local news for updates.
  • Maintain a high-level of vigilance, take appropriate steps to enhance your personal security and follow instructions of local authorities.
  • Avoid affected areas, and exercise caution if in the vicinity of any large gatherings, protests, or demonstrations.
