Visit by DHS Acting Secretary Kevin K. McAleenan

Acting Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Kevin K. McAleenan visited Guatemala to participate in bilateral and multilateral meetings with government officials representing the Northern Triangle countries, indigenous leaders, and civil society, non-governmental organizations, and the private sector of the United States and Guatemalan business leaders.

The meetings highlighted the main causes driving the current high rate of irregular migration to the United States, as well as viable options to improve the protection of vulnerable populations. During his four-day trip, McAleenan and President Jimmy Morales met to discuss improvements to bilateral cooperation prior to the expected signing of a Memorandum of Cooperation between DHS and the Ministry of the Interior of Guatemala to support the efforts of the Guatemalan government to contain the flow of irregular migration and dismantle transnational criminal organizations and human trafficking.
